Getting You Started
Before you can begin learning to drive you will need a provisional driving licence.  The application form for this can be obtained from your local post office. (D1)

You may apply for your provisional licence before your 17th birthday however it is only valid from the day you are 17.  The exception to this is if you receive Disabillity Living Allowance at the higher rate.  In this case you may learn to drive from the age of sixteen.

We recommend you study “The Highway Code” and “Driving the Essential Skills.”

Your driving instructor can supply these books as well as other additional learning aids to help you pass your theory test and driving test.

Your 1st lesson

Your instructor will explain the various legal and medical requirements that must be met; for example, you will be asked to read a number plate at the appropriate distance.  In addition you will be asked a few questions about your previous driving experience, if any.

The first things that you will be taught are simple safety checks and procedures.  Although easy to learn, these drills are essential to safe driving. Until you have learned them, it may be necessary for your instructor to drive you to an area where you can practise in absolute safety.  Once you have acquired the basic skills, then your instructor will begin to teach you how to deal with other traffic.

Each time that you learn something new, your instructor will give you full instruction, even though it may seem simple.  The second and subsequent times that you do it, the amount of instruction being given will be reduced until only key words and phrases are used.  Finally, instruction will cease and you will be totally responsible for that part of your driving.

Your instructor will be aware at all times of the responsibilities he has to you; he will act as your supervisor until it is time for the driving examiner to say that you are safe to make all your own decisions.
